Turned from Great Basin Poplar, this piece is a study in contrasts—rugged yet refined, fractured yet graceful. Extraordinary figure, natural voids, scars, and swirling grain cover nearly every inch of the form, giving it a sense of movement and depth that changes as the piece is viewed from different angles.

The dramatic character of the wood also made this an especially challenging piece to turn. Mathew hollowed it to remarkably thin walls, carefully working around the numerous openings and unstable areas while preserving the raw, natural features that make the wood so compelling.

The result is a delicate hollow form with a powerful presence—beautifully balanced, wonderfully intricate, and oh so dramatic.
